While the gang prepares for their Christmas vacation, Angel is haunted by visions of his violent past. The ghost of Jenny Calendar appears to him and reminds him in great detail of the evil deeds he has performed. At first she almost seems to be taking pity on him, but gradually her counsel grows more sinister.

Good character development, good dialogue and an OK plot.
"Amends" is BTVS Christmas Carol episode. The gang is preparing for the holidays and dealing with the fall-out of their love lives. Cordy still won't forgive Xander, Oz and Willow are moving towards being a couple again, and Buffy and Angel are determined to stay apart. Meanwhile, Angel is being haunted by the people he killed. Four ghosts from his past that want to ensure his damnation.
"Amends" highlights Angel's quest for redemption. Angel wants to be forgiven for all the horrible things that he's done. We see his remorse and continuing fear that he'll slip from the righteous path. Angel's desire to redeem his past is at the very core of his character. It motivates him through most of the five season's of "Angel" and influences his decisions, both good and bad. This episode begins his quest to make "amends."
On the downside this is our only real Christmas episode for the series. The more I re-watch this episode the less I like Boreanaz's acting in this.
Gotta love Xander sleeping outside with the plate of cookies for Santa.

What's My Line? pt. 2

Buffy is attacked by the mysterious girl and during the fight learns that her name is Kendra and that she is a Vampire Slayer. Apparently, Buffy's temporary death at the hands of the Master was enough to activate the next Slayer, and she has come to Sunnydale. They call a truce, and Giles convinces them to work together to save Angel from Spike and Drusilla.

BUFFY: It's your lucky day, Spike.
KENDRA: Two Slayers!
BUFFY: No waiting!
Good character development, average dialogue and an average plot.
Only now does Giles admit that there is a Slayer's Handbook, once Kendra mentions it - despite having told Buffy that there's no such thing in Never Kill a Boy on the First Date.
Spike was originally intended to be killed off in this episode.
Half-pint perennial victim Jonathan falls into danger once again, when he's grabbed by Patrice (assassin #3) as a hostage.
Willow kills a vampire for the first time in this episode. It's also the first time we actually see Giles dust one on-screen.

Nightmares

When strange things start happening to the students at Sunnydale High, it seems that everyone is living their worst nightmares. Buffy and the gang must hold together to stop the phenomena before reality and the nightmare world become one.

BUFFY: Scary! I'll tell you something, though. There are a lot scarier things than you. And I'm one of them.
Nightmares for everyone this episode, however Buffy is the only one who gets a extra dose of her fears. Being late for an exam that she didn't study for, in a class she never really attended. Her dad abandoning her, the Master killing her, being buried alive and then returning as a vampire. Most of these come true literally, and the last, returning as a vamp also comes to pass, metaphorically, since it is learned that Buffy's powers come from distilled essence of a demon (vampires being demons).
The Scoobies nightmares are all the run of the mill fears lots of people have, being naked in front of classroom, having to perform in front of an audience, a scary clown. Giles and Cordelia's aren't to far out there, bad hair day and forgetting a vital skill.
A lot of the good points for this episode only comes in retrospect. The different elements, story, theme and plot, just don't mesh that well.
After Buffy gets turned, she's in the graveyard in the pocket nightscape. She travels to the hospital, which is bright daylight. How did that happen, ala Spike running and smoking across town?
Buffy's tombstone puts her date of birth at 1981. Speaking of tombstones, Sarah Michelle Gellar had a morbid fear of real graveyards and being buried alive. She did overcome her fear of grave/yards as shown in the Blackwood interview.
